Thailand Family Travel StoreIt is said that if you can’t find what you’re looking for in Bangkok then it hasn't been invented yet. From modern, air conditioned malls to the bustling markets boasting a staggering variety of wares on sale from snakes to ceramics and herbs, to endless rows of Thai and western-style clothing in colourful silk and cotton. Although fixed prices are the norm in department stores, most other vendors expect you to bargain. Generally, you can obtain a final figure of between 10-40% lower than the original asking price. Remember the Thais appreciate good manners and a sense of humour, and patience and a broad smile will ensure a bargain. Bangkok is home to many modern malls, such as Paragon, Central World Plaza, and the Emporium. They are great places to shop, but do not expect to find too many bargains. Much of what is for sale has probably been imported. For the bargain hunter, visit Chatuchak Market. It is a flea market or yard sale on steriods. It is not a friendly place for strollers and toddlers. The walkways are narrow, the heat is oppressive at times, and the noise can be overbearing. It is almost always crowded, but for the true bargain hunter it cannot be missed. Every major city in Thailand has a night market or night bazaar where souveniors can be purchased. Older children will probably enjoy the adventure of shopping in this bustling environment. If your family includes infants and/or toddlers, you may want to consider using the babysitting service at your hotel if one is available. It may be very difficult to steer a stroller in the confines of most night bazaar areas. |
